Decided that before I tackle the last two fics in my book project, I should go through and re-read the whole thing and rewatch everything again. Want to make sure I'm not missing anything so I know I'm truly done when I finish those.

At the moment, I'm looking into the progression of their relationship(s) during s3. I wanted to get a closer read on how they all really felt about each other before it was all official. And what I found was kind of interesting.

At first glance, it seems like Becker has an antagonistic relationship with both of them, but looking a little more at it, it's actually quite different. And in fact, it's not all that off from Abby and Connor's relationship during this time. There's bickering and miscommunication; there's exasperation with each other's varying styles of doing things, etc., but there's also a great deal of affection, which comes out slowly over the course of the series. Indeed, Becker's sensitivity with both of them grows at about the same rate their own relationship does, which I find fascinating.

Even from the first moment they meet, though, something's different. There's a reason I include that scene in virtually every one of my vids. There's just something about the looks they all give each other that's just... There's a spark:

Cutter: Hi, here's Becker!

Becker: *nods and looks dashing*

Abby: ...

Connor: *turning to Abby* Wow! He's kinda hot, doncha think?

Abby: ...

Connor: *turning back to stare at Becks again* I'll be damned. We got ourselves a real-life action figure now! Wonder if he's anatomically correct?

Becker then spends the rest of the ep trying to be all cool and manly and shit, while Abby's running rings around him in terms of creature management, and Connor's taking the piss. By the end of the ep, I think he's figured out that he's not in Kansas Sandhurst anymore.

They're split up in 3x02, but then in 3x03, Becker and Connor start bonding, in that charming little I-snark-because-I-love sort of way they have. Becker deals out all sorts of crap, and Connor deals it right back, disarming him at every turn (a marked difference from the mostly one-sided--and meaner--stuff Stephen used to throw at him.) Then, of course, everything goes to shit, and Connor hands him Nick's dead body, and the world has changed completely. At that point, Becker knows he's feeling more for the team than he bargained for.

Then there's the little lap-sitting business in 3x04, and then the team bonding over Jenny in 3x05. By the time Christine asks him to betray the team, there's no way she was ever going to get anywhere at all--he's way too besotted with them.

He's still HB sauce at this point: He has a lovely little scene with Jenny near the end of 3x04, and a few moments with Sarah and Danny later on. But by the time 3x07 rolls around, he's definitely bonded with our pair more than anyone else. The way he and Abby interact when they're dealing with the Dracorex, for instance: He's a lot more emotionally sensitive with her there than he's been with anyone up to this point so far. And he's also close enough with Connor to readily go on the Rex-rescue mission (which is done for Abby's sake as well.)

This, of course, is where I set Both Worlds part 1. That's the point at which Becker's actually willing to drop the pretense and admit his interest. However, there's a change in dynamic with the next ep.

Becker is way bitchier in the early part of 3x08 than he's been in a while. Why? Well, my guess is that he was sort of hoping for something more with Connor, but Connor just drifted away--back toward Abby, as he does. So Becks is annoyed with Connor for doing so, and annoyed with Abby for being the target of that affection. But ultimately, his feelings for them, plus his sense of duty, compel him to nearly sacrifice himself to save them (chasing the predators.) And they, in turn, realize how much they feel for him, and mourn his apparent death.

And that right there? That seals it. By the time they're back, and it's all sorted, love, as they say, is in the air. Becker's damned curious about Abby and Jack's conversation (which Abby notices), there's the kiss. And then there's Both Worlds part 2. ;)

Unfortunately, it all unravels then. The very next day, Abby gets all weird with Connor--again--and they're off on another adventure, then off chasing Helen. And poor Becks is utterly bereft for a year. Awwww. :(

One funny little sidenote about 3x09, though: That little bit where they've just arrived at the camp and Connor sees the grill and offers a sausage? He's looking dead at Becker. Ha! Yes, Becker does want your sausage, dearie.
