And yes, I'll actually write some more damned fic soon, too.
OK, so we know Becks is totally Mr. HB sauce, and thanks to Mansfield apparently being a touchy-feely sort, he's all over just about everyone in this episode. Guh.
But that scene where they're walking away from New Dawn (see previous post) pretty much gobsmacked the hell out of me.
1. The shot is clearly framed as a pair of relationships (Emily/Matt and A/B/C).
They could have had him floating between the two couples, bringing up the rear, or even walking off with an arm around Emily instead of Abby. But nope. The instant Emily gets Matt back and they're all done with their fucking adorable 5-way hug, Becker's back at Abby's side with his arm around her. And it stays there. Until he reaches over for Connor. *wibble*
2. This is a happily-ever-after scene.
Rather than the kind of contact you see in crisis scenes (helping, giving comfort) or post-awesome-event celebration (exuberant hugs, pats on the shoulder for a job well done), this is the bit where the big damn heroes strut along as the credits roll. What do you usually see for these scenes? The hero gets the girl, and they wander off together, presumably to get married, have an awesome shag, w'ev. Which, of course, was exactly what happened with Emily and Matt. Theoretically, that should've been Abby and Connor's setup, too. Only... Becker was along for the ride. :)
There are a dozen other things I could mention--the way Becker held Emily pretty much the same as he did with Jess when she was in crisis, for instance--but this definitely stood out for me, in a big way. This show's such a total lovefest you can come up with plausible ships for just about any combination, but I honestly feel there's something different with these three, and this scene sums it up in that single shot.
Yes, undoubtedly, it's just natural canon and RL stuff--they've been friends longer than anyone else, so naturally they're more intimate and have more established-relationship body language, and it's not technically romantic.
But let me tell you how damned happy I was to watch my lovelies walk off into the sunset together. :)
