So, I think Game of Thrones is most def the new LOTR, especially in terms of the assortment of hot, young guys getting all cute with each other.
The advantage we have this time is that the gay pair is actually canon. (OK, so is Sam/Frodo, but not quite THIS canon.)

I SO totally don't need another fandom with this. Sigh...
Of course, this one's a lot easier to manage, since Gethin's made a point of the Yep, Straight thing (in a believable way, unless one assumes his SBNN involvement is a doth protest too much thing.)
